God Speaks About Money

One day while I was painting, I think it was a Friday, God spoke out of the blue: “Give $100 to R.M.” This is a friend of mine who has a family and was out of work at that time. I said to God, “Okay I will give it to him Sunday at church.” Immediately God spoke loudly and clearly, “Give it to him now!” I was shocked at how forceful God was about this and I said, “Okay I will quit work early and give it to him in case he needs to get it in the bank right away.” So about 4 0’clock I quit work and drove over to his house and there was my friend mowing his front yard. I pulled up and handed him a check. He told me that his water bill was due and that this morning he had mailed a check to pay the bill, but he did not have the funds in his account to cover it. So God covered it!
What God Wants
I had been walking with the Lord learning to listen to Him for several years when I found myself praying at home. While praying I sensed that God wanted me to surrender my control over money to him even more. Up to this point my giving had been regular although often calculated. So I prayed, “Lord one day you are going to put your finger on my finances in a big way, help me to surrender that to you and prepare for that.” I think it was a year or so later that I was praying at home and the Lord spoke. It went like this:
Lord: “I want you to give some money to R.M.”
Me: “Okay I’ll give him $100.”
Lord: “That’s good, that’s what YOU want to give him. Do you want to know what I want to give him?”
Me: I knew in my heart that this was it, so I surrendered and said, “Okay go ahead.”
Lord: “I want you to give him $1,000.”
Me: “Lord, you know I wanted to use that money to pay down a credit card balance.”
Lord: “Would it hurt you to carry that $1000 on your credit card for another year.”
Me: “No, not really, it wouldn’t really matter in the long run.”
Lord: “That’s right, but it would matter to them.”
Me: “Okay, I will do it.”
I wrote the check, and gave it to them at church on Sunday. Later in the week he told me that he needed the money by that Friday to pay for car insurance on two vehicles. That was the most money I had ever given in my life at one time. Up to that point I think the most I had ever given was around $300. I’ll tell you what – it was a great feeling to give and let go of attaching myself to money.
