How I Became A Christian
I graduated from high school in May of 1970 and spent that summer with my girlfriend and playing in a rock band. I was scheduled to begin classes at UTA in the fall. However all summer I was filled with a nagging fear of the future - I did not see the point and had no purpose for living. Unknown to others I cried when I went to bed and prayed, "God if you're really real and there's something more to life than what I have, please show me what it is." My girlfriend had recently become a Christian. One day she asked me to go to church with her. I thought, "Church! Who goes to church anymore?" But I really had nothing against it and so I said I would go. At the end of the service we were standing there and I actually felt sick. Later I realized that God was showing me that sin is a sickness inside us. I was still praying that prayer every night.
The second time I went to church with her, again at the end of the service we stood up. They were asking for people to come to the front of the church. I stood there really struggling with something, but did not know what or who. She turned to me and said, "Do you want to go up there?" I said, "Yes". She said, "Let's go." And I said, "Wait a minute." I realized that God was revealing himself to me and right there I said, "God, since you are God and I am just a man, I give myself to you." Then we walked up to the front of the church. A fellow there showed me some verses of scripture and I prayed again believing and surrendering myself to Jesus. Instantly I felt myself become full inside. The pastor took me to the back of the church and we shook people's hands as they walked past. All I could think of was how full I was in side my body (not food), but I felt that I had been changed in some way - everything was different. I wanted to tell everyone going by, but I didn't know how. (I found out later that when you believe in Jesus and surrender yourself to him He sends the Holy Spirit to live inside you and that this experience is called being born again because you receive the eternal life of God at that time making you a part of his family, his kingdom.
Now I had moved into the dorm at UTA and was reading the Bible that my girlfriend gave me. I started reading the Gospel of Matthew, then Mark, Luke, and John. One time I stayed up all night studying about baptism and was soon baptized. I began telling everyone in the dorm and even on campus about the fact that Jesus was real and the Bible was true. The next semester I became involved in The baptist Student Ministries on campus. During my 4 1/2 years at UTA I served for three years on the executive council, two years as a summer missionary, and shared about Jesus often. My first job after graduation was as an assistant in Baptist Student Ministries at two other colleges. The Spirit of God still lives in me today. I enjoy his presence inside me, a purpose for living, a joy and hope for life. Even though I sin and make mistakes, he is always faithful to keep all of his promises and shower me with his love, grace and mercy. How about you? Would you like to know the personal presence of the living God in your life? Then believe him right now and surrender yourself to him. Call out to him - tell him you believe and give yourself to him right now and receive him into your heart and life. Do it now. God says...
Behold, I stand at the door and knock, If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with me. Jesus - Revelation 3:20
